"Car conundrums"

You drive an old car that doesn’t look so good, but gets you where you need to go. You are saving money because you want to pay for college. You know the car won’t pass inspection for emissions. You friend's brother is a mechanic. He always passes your friends car for emissions even if it doesn’t really meet the standards. Your friend told you that his brother could help you out also. You know that if you are without a car you can’t get to work and you can’t afford to spend money on a new car. However, you don’t know if you want to drive a car that is polluting the air beyond the legal limit. What would you do?

  Environmental laws
  • What types of air pollutants do cars emit?
  • Would you take the car to your friend’s brother and let him pass it for emissions illegally?
  • Would you have the car tested legally and use money from your college savings to pay for repairs?
  • Would you spend your money on a new car and forget about college or borrow the money?
  • Would you do something else?
  • What law will you and your friend's brother be violating if you allow the car to be passed illegally?
