Rocks: Classifying Activity

Now you will test your classification skills by matching the following samples of rocks with the correct rock name.

First, make notes of each rock sample.  Make notes on:

  • Color
  • Minerals found in rock,
  • Type (sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic),
  • And any other features that you see.


Look at the patterns in this rock?
Look at the patterns in this rock?  What common minerals do you see in this rock?

Is this rock sedimentary or metamorphic?
Is this rock sedimentary or metamorphic?
 

Pay close attention to the surface of the rock
Look closely at the surface of the rock!!

Common rocks that you see everyday
You probably see these everyday!!

Rocks within a rock!
Wow!! This rock has a lot going on!

Different colors but same rock type
All of them have the same name.  What is common among them?

Once you have made your observations, now you will read descriptions of each of these rocks.  As a geologist, it is your job to match the correct description with the corresponding rock sample above.
