Whale Oil

Whale oil was used for centuries and was a very valuable fuel source for providing lighting during the 18th and 19th centuries. However, the fast rate at which whale oil was used made this energy source non-renewable. Many species of whales became nearly extinct since the whaling industry did not think about preserving the whale population in the world's oceans. Today, whaling is mostly illegal.
