Broughal NASA Explorer School/Lehigh University Partnership

Welcome to the Broughal NASA Explorer School/Lehigh University Partnership Web site!

We are part of the NASA Explorer program and are working to transform the school curriculum at Broughal Middle School toward a science and technology signature school.

Curricular Projects

Environmental Issues: Land Use Change
Environmental Issues: Land Use Change is an interdisciplinary technology-embedded middle school science unit. This curricular unit focuses on how human activities influence environmental changes related to land use. Students use geospatial information technology tools including Google Earth and remotely sensed images to investigate modern day land use issues and land use change over time.

GIS Storm Sewers Unit
GIS Storm Sewers Unit is a technology-embedded middle school geography unit designed for the 7th grade technology class curriculum at Broughal Middle School. Students learn surveying skills with handheld Global Positioning devices – GPS, gather storm sewer placement data, and produce a GIS [Geographic Information Systems] display in Arc Explorer Java Edition for Education (AEJEE) of the sampled area. Students analyze their collected storm sewer data with AEJEE and investigate patterns of storm sewers placements and apply spatial analysis skills to design a solution to place sewers in an unsurveyed portion of South Bethlehem.
